My, what lovely coconuts you have over there!” Imagine using that as a pick-up line! You would probably have received a prompt *slap* in the face! So simple to make and yet, to the untrained eye, you could easily pass them off as hours of hard-labour in the kitchen!

So put on your cooking hats and prepare to dazzle someone!

Coconut Petit Fours

Ingredients: 2 ¼ cup dessicated coconut, ¾ cup caster sugar, 2 tbsp self-raising flour sifted, 1 egg beaten, ¼ cup milk, ½ tsp vanilla essence

Steps: Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Mix together coconut, sugar and sifted self-raising flour in a bowl. Stir in the egg, then milk and vanilla essence. Mix until well combined. Take tablespoonfuls of mixture and make firm round balls. Place on a tray lined with baking paper and bake for 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned.

Can you give us the origins or translation of petit fours. I understand they are miniture deserts served with post-meal coffee and tea. When I consulted the oft temperamental BabelFish it spat "small furnaces" at me.

P.S. Are these an alter-ego for coconut macaroons?

Petit fours does literally translate in French to "Small ovens". The term originated in France many centuries ago when little cakes were baked after large cakes while the brick ovens were cooling down. However nowadays, it is a generalised term referring to variety of fancy, miniature baked goods- this includes cakes, pastries, fancy cookies, marzipan and chocolates. So yes the Babelfish translation wasn't half bad!

The coconut petit fours do taste very similar to coconut macaroons, I think the main difference between the two is the size.
