Make your own BBQ sauce

June 18th 2008 00:44
BBQ ribs delicious I want to eat them now
One of my big issues with the bbq scene here in Sydney is that there's not the same kind of love and care that you might find in other countries. I've written an article before that got attacked by furious Australians, claiming the bbq here was the 'best in the world', but I can only speak from my own, admittedly limited, experience.

Recently, I've found a farmer's market in Rozelle where they do a great bacon & egg roll... the eggs are farm fresh and the bacon is - get this - port-cured bacon. That's what I'm taking about!

Still, one thing disappoints... all the ingredients in the roll are fantastic, but then they offer us a Coles brand BBQ sauce to put on it. Argh! Where's the love of BBQ sauce?

BBQrecipesecrets.com gives a couple of easy recipes for bbq sauce.
:

"Basic Tomato BBQ Sauce
1 regular can of tomato sauce
1 can of tomato paste
2 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons brown sugar
3 cloves garlic, crushed
4 tablespoons onion, minced
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon cayenne
fresh ground pepper to taste

Cook the garlic and onion until it's soft, and then add all the rest of the ingredients. Simmer on low for 20-30 minutes. Keep stirring it often so it doesn't burn, then refrigerate for a few days before you use it. This allows the flavors to blend and mellow."

Once you've got a basic recipe down, you can experiment wildly, adding things like tabasco, shoe polish or even toothpaste. This is not a recommendation - just things that you 'could' do.

Not bad, Cibb. This looks really good. And now I have a hankering for bacon & egg roll for today's lunch! Or that pork you have in your pic.

the bacon & egg roll from the farmers market is great- the key is to have good bacon.

I wrote a post on here before on making your own bacon - I haven't gone that far, yet.

But I did make this bbq sauce, except I threw in a cup of whiskey for flavour. It's good sauce, tastes better after a few days of sitting in the fridge, but I'm disappointed that I can't really taste the whiskey!

Home-made BBQ is definitely a better and nicer offering. I'd be game to add some tabasco sauce Very creative of u to try with whiskey!
