Infusing Vodka
March 10th 2008 01:23
Instead of buying Grapefruit and Citrus Vodka, Wired Magazine has a great primer on how to make your own infused flavour vodka, turning that staple of the household bar into a base for infinite flavours.
When it comes down to it, you're putting fruit in vodka, and letting it sit. Citrus flavours are the easiest to infuse, but subtle flavours, like cucumber and watermelon, can be added as well. Check out the list:
While you can use any jar, you can buy an infusion jar that comes with a spigot, allowing you to taste the vodka as it's maturing. A nice touch, I think!
Waiting is probably the hardest part, but Wired suggest that citrus will be ready in a few days, but it might take weeks for the subtle flavours of other fruits to cut through the drink.
Note: the above image is from an excellent article on making lime-infused vodka, with some helpful hints on taking a cheap vodka, and filtering it with a water filter to make it taste better!

"Almost any glass jar will work, if short on time or materials. If you can track down a bona fide infusion jar, even better. They're easy to spot as most have a spigot at the bottom and a secure lid for the top. In a worst case scenario, you can always go to local retailer (Target, Wal-Mart, etc.) and pick up a cheap sun tea jar. Just make sure that whatever you bring home is clear, can hold up to 750ml, and has a tight lid."
