Dear readers and subscribers…“at Lara’s” has moved to her own blog!

Blowfish testicles poison diners in Japan

Blowfish getting ready to be prepared in Japan
From the Guardian comes this excellent photo of a blowfish getting prepared in a Japanese restaurant, as well as this news article, which announces that seven diners in Japan fell ill after eating unlicensed blowfish testicles.

"The owner of the restaurant in Tsuruoka city, who is also the chef, had no licence to serve blowfish and was being questioned on suspicion of professional negligence, police official Yoshihito Iwase said.

Chinese trying to stop the sale and consumption of cats

Cats caged in preparation for chinese cuisine
Before I moved to China, my fellow Canadians would look at me in disgust and state 'in China, they eat cats'.

We-ell, that's not precisely true. In most of the country, the Chinese find the idea disgusting... it's only in Guangzhou, the southernmost province, where they love them some cats

Running out of Mustard

Maille French mustard
Hot dog gourmets are out of luck... instead of decorating your dogs with American-style mustard, you've probably grown used to a little French Dijon, or country-style whole grain mustard.

If you're that picky, you've gone too far. A New York hot dog should really be decorated with that cheap supermarket mustard - the fancy stuff, we save for sandwiches made of the finest ingredients

Homemade Butter

Homemade butter
Butter! It's been demonized for so long as the cause of all our obesity problems, but recent research is starting to suggest that it might not be all bad.

Besides, butter tastes better

How to cut back on food during the credit crisis

Old New York
With the looming financial crisis, one of the hardest hit industries will be the gourmet food industry. That niche area of commercial enterprise that aims to bring ridiculously expensive food items from rare parts of the world.

Fancy wines, handmade cheeses, pate involving animals that you didn't know existed.... all of these luxuries will be the first to go as the families of previously-rich bankers re-discover the joys of canned ravioli

100 things to eat before you die

Foie Gras dinner plate
The guy that did the '100 Things to Do Before You Die' book died earlier this month, without finishing all the things in his book.

At least he did SOME of them. You and I are likely to never have the energy to do even 10 percent of the stuff we should do before we, er, snuff it

Gadgets for Lazy Cooks

Cheeseburger in a Can
While other food bloggers are working hard to bring you recipes and great cooking tips, I generally seem to fall flat on this site. I've posted 'Wiener Water Soup' and pictures of Luther Burgers, which should tell you my range of gastronomic delight.

Well, it's not my fault. Wait - actually, it is my fault, naturally, but it's against my nature to work hard. I'm lazy

Your Favourite Fictional Foods

Futurama Bachelor Chow Fictional Food
One of my favourite food blogs on the web is the delicious Al Dente, the place that actually gives a recipe for grilled Twinkies.

This week, they posted a post on the 5 most delicious fictional foods, a scrumptious list of foods that have been on TV and the movies

Hamdog and Luther Burger Photos

This story extracted from the great post on Texas Burger Guy.

The mistake most people make when creating the world's most dangerous burger, is that they stay firmly entrenched in the status quo. They're afraid to think outside the box. That's why it took a visionary like Luther Vandross to come up with the next logical evolutionary step in hamburger science

Are supermarkets forcing specialty stores to close?

What are these patty cases worth to you?

Are supermarkets forcing specialty stores to close? Or are those *big-chain* supermarkets just giving consumers more for their money? Or are specialty stores just overcharging us? I’m not sure. But what I do know is that there is HUGE price difference which is very real! For example, these mini patty cases which are commonly used for baking cupcakes cost just over $1.50 in supermarkets but exactly the same patty cases in another baking specialty store cost upwards of $5! That’s like a 300% difference! It’s unbelievable!

A bakery runs on the honor system

Perhaps people wouldn't bake so much at home if bakeries were a little more reasonably priced. I like the Sonoma bakery in Glebe, but at $7 for a loaf of sourdough rye, I'd be better off just mixing flour and activated yeast in my mouth and swishing it around.

Ontario honour system bakery
Keeping the prices at a bakery is tough, because the cost of running the bakery outweighs the cost of those perfectly flaky croissants

Food shortages in Haiti force Haitians to eat dirt cookies

Mud Cookies from Haiti
While we celebrate the flavours of the world and gorge on culinary delights, I think it's important to remember how lucky we are to have to luxury to choose our food - and never go hungry.

There are places in the world where people are not so fortunate, and one of those places is Haiti, where food shortages are forcing people to eat cookies made from the dirt. Mud cakes. Clay biscuits. Whatever you call it, it's not a good thing

So what’s the difference between sultanas, currants and raisins anyway?

I’m sure we’ve all come across this situation. A lonely, shrivelled, defenceless *dried grape* lies on a plate screaming “eat me”, whilst people gather and point saying, “it’s a sultana”, “no, it’s a raisin”, “are you sure? I think it’s a currant”, and so on and so forth. That poor lonely dried grape! He just wants to be eaten. It’s his goal in life. Neigh, his dream! But this cannot be, until everyone has debated on *what* he really is. So I think for the sake of the poor grape we should clear up, what exactly is the difference between sultanas, currants and raisins, so that the eating can continue.
