Military Rations

May 28th 2008 02:23
Meals, Ready to Eat military rations
Cooking is great, but sometimes, you're stuck in a apocalyptic wasteland, and tomatoes are either extinct or have become flesh-eating aliens, so you're stuck for your pasta sauce.

That's why it's always a good idea to store a case of MREs around the house.

MRE stands for Meals, Ready to Eat, which is what the American military calls their field rations. They replaced the hard-hitting C-rations in 1980 and have undergone continual improvement to meet the needs to soldiers.

It's a complicated problem... in order for military personnel to perform at their best, they need to have satisfying, nutritionally complete meals. Even if the meals contain all the necessary ingredients, but are unappetizing, the field personnel will soon get weary of eating them.

I've tasted a few of the Canadian army ration packs and some of them were goo-oo-od. Mmmm, cherries. Mmmm, cabbage rolls.

The site MREinfo has a great breakdown on military rations in America and the rest of the world, with reviews and suggestions for use!

I'll admit it - I just like the idea of having a crate of these at home, as an easy way to prepare for camping trips. Fun!

So, go ahead. Instead of cooking tonight, let's rip off the top of some military rations and have ourselves a good outdoor meal by the campfire.

Infuser oval tong!
Infuser oval tong!

Infuser oval tong - supposedly the “classical infuser tong”, I must say upfront that I am easily won over by little gadgets that look fun and nifty. Thus being one who is prone to being drawn in by *fun-looking* objects, the infuser oval tong immediately caught my eye! “ooooohhhh..shiny, I thought to myself… I can use it every day when I make my tea”.

Heart Shaped Muffin Try- Silicone Bakeware
Heart Shaped Muffin Tray- Silicone Bakeware
Wow! So if you're a cynic at times like me, and shake your head with resignation when you see the *latest craze*, then you're bound to have shaken your head at the latest range of silicone bakeware.

"Pffft... Plastic bakeware . what rubbish...WHO NEEDS IT!? " - pretty much sums up my initial thoughts on the above. However, I must now apologise for my previous thoughts, because after purchasing the above "Heart shaped muffin tray and trying it out, I was overwhelmed by how EASY it really is to bake using silicone bakeware! The muffins REALLY do just PoP out! As in, *pop out*! No sticking to the metal edge business in sight! I was in awe! And not only that! It surprisingly can withstand temperatures ranging from minus 40 to 230 degrees Celsius! That has got to be at least more than 250 degrees more than i can stand!

Patisserie Cupcake dishes
O-M-G! So I do realize that so far almost all my posts involve me cooking and a subsequent recipe following, but I just had to make a mention of these darling patisserie pink cup cake dishes I bought the other day! They’re so cute! *gushes* And they come in a variety of other colours including lilac, mint (green), blue, and white. Don’t you have visions of these cute little dishes carrying delicious cupcakes!? They’re perfect cupcake size too!

They make a very cute gift for friends who like to bake too, which is handy since Christmas is only 17 sleeps away! You can find them at your local kitchenware store, but if you’re a computer whiz check out the Maxwell and Williams Site, which gives you access to their whole range. Unfortunately you are not able to purchase any items online as of yet, but I’m sure it will all be up and running all too soon.
