Candy Thermometers

Candy Thermometer
Candy Thermometer

I have a CANDY THERMOMETER!! I know! I know! How exciting!

Now for all of you who are shaking your head incredulously with disgust at this moment, can I just say in my defense that the beloved candy thermometer is a real gem! No really! It is an ESSENTIAL part of cooking any form of candy if you do not want to risk burning it and ending up with a pot full of burnt sugar! Believe me, I speak from experience, and when you sort of “do it by feel” without EXACTLY knowing what you should be “feeling”, the first batch inevitably requires burnt sugar being thrown out and a large amount of pan soaking. The moral of the story- use a candy thermometer when making your candy, otherwise you risk major disappointment!

So ten points to my Candy thermometer for actually recording temperatures! But wait! There’s more! A candy thermometer doesn’t just “keep temperature” it has graduations for the stages of candy making on the actual thermometer! So you can tell whilst you are cooking that “oh yes, it is in the thread stage” or “yes it is now in the hard-crack stage”! Ingenious! And if that wasn’t nifty enough, all the temperatures are recorded on the back!

There are a few downsides to the “oh so mighty” candy thermometer though. It is made from glass and as a result is fragile, so it does need to be handled with care. Also as you are using it to measure very high temperatures ( in the hundreds), you have to remember NOT to wipe it with a cold cloth/wash it with cold water immediately after measuring, otherwise you’re dear candy thermometer might explode, which would be a tragedy for all!
