Arsenic in Rice

No, it's not a recommendation.... it's the shocking result of research conducted at Aberdeen University, where professor Andrew Meharg has found that 10% of rice found on British shelves have higher-than-allowed-in-China levels of arsenic.

Read the Guardian article!

Arsenic is not something you want in your food, even though it's reputed to give a nice 'almondy' smell. Well, at least, I read that in a comic book, I think.

The thing is, arsenic is pretty rare to get in food. Rice, though, is like a big carbohydrate sponge, soaking up all the leached elements from the soil... and in South-East Asia, there have been reports of high level of arsenic in the soil.

Meharg says that the amounts of arsenic in British rice are unlikely to kill anyone, but it is something to think about for consumers that may be eating large quantities of the grain. Maybe it's time to switch to Cheetos?

Another shocking finding in the study is that some rice-based baby foods were found to contain more than 30% the level of arsenic that a similar product would have in China, where they have the strictest regulations on rice quality.

Strained plums for your baby, until they find pesticides in the plums. Ignorance is bliss, isn't it?
